Oversized cargo: when you need a freighter
When a machine, line or large unit will not fit a passenger aircraft: how to tell you need a freighter, what to check before booking, and where time is usually lost on oversized air freight to Kazakhstan.
What counts as oversized in air freight
For a buyer or logistics lead, oversized cargo is not “a big box”. It is cargo that will not pass the door, the deck height, or the restraint rules of the chosen aircraft type. Passenger flights with a belly hold take standard pallets and containers of limited height. A wide-body freighter is needed when length, width, height, or their combination exceed those limits, or when a special pallet, non-standard lashing, or high-lift unloading is required.
Typical cases: machines and production lines, industrial units, large moulds, exhibition stands, oversized spare parts. Dangerous goods under IATA DGR may be allowed only on cargo aircraft (CAO). That is a separate criterion and must not be mixed with pure geometry.
Steps before booking
Do not start with “approximate sizes”. Record a drawing or tape-measure photos per piece: length, width, height, actual weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, whether tipping and stacking are allowed. Volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) / 6000; the airline charges the greater of actual and volumetric weight. For oversized pieces, volume often drives cost more than kilograms.
- Confirm whether the cargo can be dismantled and what that saves on height and door clearance.
- Agree packing: rigid frame, palletising, protection of protrusions — without this the aircraft may not be confirmed.
- Check temperature control, DGR, and high-value handling: they change aircraft type and airport processing.
- Prepare a commercial invoice with HS codes, a packing list by pieces, a contract or supporting invoice; the document set is checked before departure.
KAZLOGIST selects a wide-body freighter, special pallets, lashing calculation, and an unloading plan. Pickup at the shipper, export clearance, AWB, and space booking with partner airlines are part of a door-to-door setup.
Where money and time are lost
Most disruptions start with inaccurate dimensions: the piece “almost fits”, then the door or deck on the ramp does not. The cargo is offloaded, another freighter is waited for, packing is redone. The second loss is centre of gravity and lashing: without a calculation, crew or ground staff refuse loading. The third is documents and marks: weight and piece count that do not match the packing list, missing permits for equipment.
Do not book a passenger flight “just in case” if height or length is already on the limit. Switching to a freighter at the last moment usually costs more time than choosing the right aircraft type at once. Warehouse re-packing and palletising before departure is usually cheaper than idle time at the origin airport.
Route, timing, and aircraft type
Transit is counted from leaving the shipper’s warehouse to release at the destination airport; delivery to the door is usually plus one day. As a guide: Europe to Kazakhstan 3–5 days, China/Asia 3–6 days, Middle East 2–4 days, USA 5–8 days. Urgent shipments — 2–3 days if space is available. For oversized cargo the same guide applies, but freighter availability and ramp slots matter more than passenger schedules.
There is no minimum weight: shipments from 1 kg to large commercial lots are arranged. Charter is considered when a scheduled freighter cannot cover size, urgency, or an exhibition timetable with return export.
What goes into the cost
The price includes the per-kg rate, fuel and security surcharges, terminal handling, AWB and export declaration, pickup and delivery. The exact price is given after a manager’s calculation: route, weight, volume, cargo type, and urgency. Consultants do not quote ballpark tariffs.
If cargo moves from China, Europe, Turkey, or the USA to Kazakhstan, plan a freighter as soon as door height or lashing is in doubt — not after a check-in refusal. Checking documents before departure reduces export idle risk.
To match an aircraft and lashing plan to your dimensions, leave a request for a shipment calculation — a manager will contact you during business hours.
