Packing air cargo to Kazakhstan: where money and time are lost

How to prepare cargo for air freight from China, Europe, Turkey and the US: volumetric weight, pallets, marking, consolidation and typical buyer mistakes.

Why packing matters more than it looks

The airline charges the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6000. An empty “air-filled” carton, crooked tape and protruding corners increase dimensions and cost even if the goods are light. For a buyer or logistics manager that is a direct budget overrun and a risk that the cargo will not fit the booked space.

KAZLOGIST collects cargo from the shipper, handles export clearance, the AWB and space with partner airlines, then delivers to the destination airport and the consignee. If pieces are poorly built, re-packing is still needed at the shipper warehouse or during consolidation — extra time and handling.

What to check before pickup

Before the driver leaves, match the packing list to reality: weight and dimensions per piece, carton count, fragility, “this way up”. The commercial invoice with HS codes and the packing list must match what sits on the pallet. Mismatches are caught at export and on import into Kazakhstan: delay, inspection, terminal idle time.

  • Cartons — new or intact, no crushed walls.
  • Stretch wrap and edge boards — so edges do not spread when loaded into a ULD.
  • Pallet — stable, no overhang.
  • Marks — consignee, piece count, fragile, do not turn over.
  • Photo report before handover — records condition and cuts disputes.

There is no minimum weight — we ship from 1 kg to large commercial lots. Small lots from several suppliers are worth consolidating: several suppliers in one shipment, re-pack and palletising at the warehouse. That fills volume and avoids flying “air” on separate waybills.

Volume, securing and oversized cargo

Even ordinary boxed cargo on a wide pallet can produce volumetric weight above actual. Measure the outer contour after wrapping, not the “net” size of the goods. If heights differ, do not build a tower: top cartons crush, the cube grows, and aircraft securing gets harder.

Oversized freight needs a wide-body freighter, special pallets, a lashing plan and high-lift unloading. Household packing will not “make it fit”: you need a rigid base, sling points and a scheme the carrier will accept. Otherwise the origin airport will refuse the shipment.

Special cargo: DGR and temperature

Dangerous goods move under IATA DGR: lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, reagents. You need an SDS/MSDS, certified UN packaging and marks, and a shipper’s declaration. Some items are cargo-aircraft only (CAO). A household box and ordinary tape fail here — refusal and a lost slot.

Temperature-controlled cargo needs thermal containers, loggers, priority airport handling and a temperature report to the consignee. Packing must keep the contour and not block sensors. Transit is counted from leaving the shipper warehouse to release at the destination airport; door delivery is usually plus one day. Typical ranges: Europe 3–5 days, China and Asia 3–6, Middle East 2–4, USA 5–8, urgent 2–3 days if space is available. These are not guarantees, but a usual window when documents and packing are ready.

Customs, insurance and typical mistakes

Import into Kazakhstan needs an invoice with HS codes, packing list, AWB, contract or supporting invoice, and if required a certificate of origin and permits. We check the set before departure. A wrong piece count or weight on the list creates an AWB mismatch and inspection.

Insurance does not replace packing. The carrier’s liability follows air-carriage rules; breakage from voids inside cartons is often treated as insufficient preparation. Use inner dunnage, do not mix heavy and fragile in one piece, do not write on tape over barcodes.

  • Cube calculated on the product, not the outer pack.
  • DGR mixed with general cargo without a declaration.
  • No photos of pallets before pickup.
  • Shipped “as is” from the factory without palletising.
  • Orientation and centre of gravity not agreed for oversized pieces.

The rate includes the per-kilo charge, fuel and security surcharges, terminal handling, AWB and export declaration, pickup and delivery. The exact figure comes from a manager after calculation: route, weight, volume, cargo type and urgency. There are no ballpark prices — leave contacts; a quote is usually within an hour in business hours. We work with companies and private shippers, office in Almaty, lanes from Europe, China and Asia, the Middle East and the USA, including door-to-door, hand-carry for urgent spare parts and exhibition cargo with return.

Send piece dimensions, weight, lane and cargo type — we will quote the move and show where packing is eating the budget.
