Cargo insurance for air freight to Kazakhstan
How a buyer or logistics manager covers damage, loss and delay on air shipments from China, Europe, Turkey and the US: what to check in the policy, where money is lost, and how to fit insurance into a door-to-door chain.
Why insure air cargo if you already have an AWB
The air waybill records the contract of carriage, routing and parties. It does not replace insurance. Airline liability is capped by conditions of carriage and international rules. After damage, shortage or loss, recovery often fails to cover the real value of the goods, a missed delivery window and the cost of a replacement shipment. For a buyer that is a simple equation: invoice value plus line downtime minus what the carrier actually pays.
KAZLOGIST.KZ arranges pickup at the shipper, export clearance, the AWB, space with partner airlines, and delivery to the destination airport and consignee. Insurance remains a separate decision of the cargo owner or forwarder. It must be placed before departure, not after an incident.
Which risks to cover on lanes into Kazakhstan
Typical cases: handling damage in a hub, wetting, impact when transhipping out-of-gauge cargo, a temperature break, delay caused by documents, partial shortage on a consolidation. For dangerous goods under IATA DGR, add refusal at acceptance and forced re-packing. For temperature-controlled lots, what matters is not only a failure but a documented temperature chain.
- Physical loss and damage on the full door-to-door path.
- Theft and missing pieces, especially on groupage and re-packing.
- Salvage, sorting and disposal costs after damage.
- Delay in release, if it is expressly included (often excluded).
Indicative times from the shipper’s warehouse to release at the destination airport: Europe 3–5 days, China and Asia 3–6 days, Middle East 2–4 days, USA 5–8 days; urgent shipments are usually 2–3 days when space is available. Door delivery is usually plus one day. Cover should span that horizon plus warehouse work: consolidation, palletising and storage before uplift.
Steps before you book the flight
First lock the insured value: commercial invoice with HS codes, packing list with weight and dimensions per piece, contract or supporting invoice. Without that the policy is understated or a claim is declined. Check that description, piece count and marks match what will go on the AWB.
Next name the beneficiary: the importer in Kazakhstan, the shipper, or a bank under an LC. State the routing and cargo type: general, DGR, temperature-controlled, high-value, out-of-gauge, exhibition with return. DGR needs an MSDS/SDS, certified UN packaging, marks and a shipper’s declaration; some items are cargo-aircraft only (CAO). The insurer reviews the same papers as the airline.
We check the Kazakhstan import set before departure: invoice, packing list, AWB, contract, and where needed a certificate of origin and permits. An incomplete set causes both a customs stop and a denial on “breach of carriage conditions”.
What to read in the wording, where money is lost
Read exclusions, not only the “all risks” headline. Common carve-outs: inadequate packing, internal breakage without external force, ordinary loss in weight, delay as such, cargo without a temperature logger, lithium batteries in breach of DGR, hand-carry outside the declared mode.
- Sum insured. Work from invoice value plus freight and duties if you need to replace the lot. Under-insuring saves premium and cuts the payout.
- Deductible. Minor handling damage is often absorbed by the franchise. Critical for fragile goods and cosmetics.
- Territory and storage. The policy must include pickup, export warehouse, transfer airports, release and last mile.
- Evidence. Photo report at palletising, temperature loggers, shortage reports at the terminal. Without them the dispute stretches.
Air freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight: volumetric weight = length × width × height (cm) / 6000. The freight price includes the per-kg rate, fuel and security surcharges, terminal handling, AWB and export declaration, pickup and delivery. The exact freight figure is given by a manager after calculation; it depends on routing, weight, volume, cargo type and urgency. Insurance premium is calculated separately and is not replaced by “carrier cover built into the rate”.
How to fit insurance into work with KAZLOGIST.KZ
There is no minimum weight: from 1 kg to large commercial lots. For out-of-gauge cargo we select a wide-body freighter, special pallets, lashing calculation and high-loader offload — the policy must expressly allow those operations. Temperature cargo uses thermo-containers, loggers, priority handling and a report to the consignee: keep copies with the claim file.
Legal entities work under contract with bank transfer. For private shippers, payment terms are confirmed by a manager. Agents can work under an agency agreement with commission on each completed shipment.
Before departure, align routing, cargo type and documents with the manager, place cover on the full value of the lot, and keep photos and loggers. To get an exact freight calculation, leave your contacts — during business hours we usually respond within an hour.
